I’m about to get all up in your face. This week, we’re following up my exceedingly popular post about Manuka Honey, my face wash of choice!
When my friend Melissa tried out the sweet nectar, she had less than stellar results to begin with. This spawned a lengthly conversation as I started to remember all the other facial care tipis I failed to mention! Let’s dive in head– uhhh, face first.
- Drink Water- You’ve heard it 1,000 times over, and it’s still true. The best thing you can do for your complexion is to drink a healthy amount of water. Your skin is better hydrated and has increased blood flow, all of which lead to that healthy, young, plump skin we all want to show off.
- Exfoliate- It’s damn hard for a pimple to form without dead skin cells. By decreasing the amount of dead skin cells on your face, you can eliminate those pesky pimples that keep popping up. Exfoliate once a day, gently (your face is not a cake pan) with a facial scrubber or exfoliating cream. You can get either of those helpful items at your friendly neighborhood grocery store!
- Moisturize- Before you oily-skinned beauties write me off, listen to the science! Simply put, your skin is already creating a certain amount of oil. When we scrub, clean, and douse our face in rubbing alcohol in an attempt to eliminate that oil (and in our minds, the pimples that follow) our skin overreacts. (Seriously, skin, chill out.) It notices a deficit in the necessary oil quota and begins to way overproduce in an attempt to compensate for all the oil we’re eliminating. Moisturizing will fix this problem. Find a moisturizer out there that fits your skin (dry, oily, or combination). Make sure that one of the first three ingredients listed is water. This is always a good indicator that what you’re putting on your face isn’t purely chemical (eesh). I usually moisturize just once a day, but experiment for a while. Perhaps your skin needs a double dose. My preferred moisturizer is Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture, Combination Skin, 4 Ounce
.
- Watch the paint- I’m not about to tell you to throw your makeup out the window. But your skin will love having a rest every now and then. Next time you’re staying in on a Sunday, leave your face alone. The mailman won’t care, I promise (because he’s off of work too…).
