I’m about to get all up in your face. This week, we’re following up my exceedingly popular post about Manuka Honey, my face wash of choice!

When my friend Melissa tried out the sweet nectar, she had less than stellar results to begin with. This spawned a lengthly conversation as I started to remember all the other facial care tipis I failed to mention! Let’s dive in head– uhhh, face first.

  1. Drink Water- You’ve heard it 1,000 times over, and it’s still true. The best thing you can do for your complexion is to drink a healthy amount of water. Your skin is better hydrated and has increased blood flow, all of which lead to that healthy, young, plump skin we all want to show off.
  2. Exfoliate- It’s damn hard for a pimple to form without dead skin cells. By decreasing the amount of dead skin cells on your face, you can eliminate those pesky pimples that keep popping up. Exfoliate once a day, gently (your face is not a cake pan) with a facial scrubber or exfoliating cream. You can get either of those helpful items at your friendly neighborhood grocery store!
  3. Moisturize- Before you oily-skinned beauties write me off, listen to the science! Simply put, your skin is already creating a certain amount of oil. When we scrub, clean, and douse our face in rubbing alcohol in an attempt to eliminate that oil (and in our minds, the pimples that follow) our skin overreacts. (Seriously, skin, chill out.) It notices a deficit in the necessary oil quota and begins to way overproduce in an attempt to compensate for all the oil we’re eliminating. Moisturizing will fix this problem. Find a moisturizer out there that fits your skin (dry, oily, or combination). Make sure that one of the first three ingredients listed is water. This is always a good indicator that what you’re putting on your face isn’t purely chemical (eesh). I usually moisturize just once a day, but experiment for a while. Perhaps your skin needs a double dose. My preferred moisturizer is Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture, Combination Skin, 4 Ounce.
  4. Watch the paint- I’m not about to tell you to throw your makeup out the window. But your skin will love having a rest every now and then. Next time you’re staying in on a Sunday, leave your face alone. The mailman won’t care, I promise (because he’s off of work too…).
Now, do we need an obligatory picture of a girl touching her wonderful skin (which she really shouldn’t be doing because our hands are a breeding ground for bacteria)? Yes? Ok.
Take care of that pretty face, y’all. And carpe the HELL out of this diem!

Sweet and sour chicken. Have I taken a break? Or have I taken a break?

I’ve taken a break.

I’ve bounced around many possible (and eventual) topics for blog posts here at Athena Fey. All interest me and all gleam as important nuggets I want to share with you. From hair tips and facial care, to encouraging words when buying your first car all on your own, to spring fling fun deals, there’s so much I want to share with the readers of Athena Fey.

But the truth is, I have been wholly uninspired these past few weeks. In fact, I’ve passed uninspired and dipped into “Dear sweet cheese, let me tune out!”

I’ve been dreaming of vacations and locations where cell service dies. I’ve been searching for the inspiration and motivation to get back on my game. But I find myself fighting high negativity. The news lately has been particularly disheartening to me. It’s election year, and I know I’m at the beginning of an uphill battle with that one, since my political beliefs, though backed by sincere thought, become emotional when challenged. In less than a month I will make my 2012 bathing suit premiere in front of my dearest friends, and I just can’t seem to shake off insecurity or hop on the consistent workout bandwagon to battle it. I’ve been fighting a sinus infection, I’m missing lost loved ones, I’m crying quite randomly and truthfully, I’m tired.

Usually, when I feel bombarded and weak, I turn to my favorite form of inspiration: movies. I’ve always loved movies. I’m a dramatic person in truth, and there’s always a movie that seems to play out my particular emotions though a character that I can relate to. And because Hollywood is what it is, my character always wins. I can pick which ending I want.

At first I gravitated towards The Holiday. I’ve no idea how many times I’ve seen this movie, but I have it memorized. I just love how Amanda’s character has her grand moment at the very beginning of the movie, and by the end, I’m rooting so hard for Iris to have hers, and she delivers. “Gumption!”

Mmmm… but that’s not quite what I’m looking for this time.

What about Pride and Prejudice? A classic tale about a woman who’s strong from the start and has to be hit hard in the face with her future before accepting it. And the music is sensational. No… not quite right.

And then my finger grazes across the cover of You’ve Got Mail. “Oh yes…” I think. “This might do the trick.”

But it seems that my love for the movie made me forget that my heroine doesn’t win. She doesn’t. And when Meg Ryan perfectly delivers the following line, I crumble.

Joe Fox: It wasn’t personal.

Kathleen Kelly: What is that supposed to mean? I am so sick of that. All that means is that it wasn’t personal to you. But it was personal to me. It was personal to a lot of people. And what’s so wrong with being personal, anyway?

Joe Fox: Uh, nothing…

Kathleen Kelly: Whatever else anything is, it ought to begin by being personal.

It all feels very personal. And I remember that we all feel that way. Because to someone, somewhere, something is very personal. Every action, every news story, every insecurity, every comment, is personal. And I have hidden away these past 10 days in fear of being too personal. But shouldn’t every true cause begin by being personal?

So let’s get personal. Instead of offering up some grand solution for feeling small, which could never work because every solution is personal, I simply ask, what inspires you? Where do you go for inspiration when you’re feeling weird, or down, or out? What are your rituals when you find yourself feeling tired and weak?

I have found that chocolate really does fight off dementors, Pinterest can be an incredible distraction tool (I’ve started several projects this past week, and baked a few more) when it’s not intent on putting a picture of an Olympic athlete on my feed, and movies will always be there for me, thank heaven! Jennifer Lawrence is currently inspiring me to love my body image and Ellen videos keep me chuckling. What about you?

Also, puppies.

It’s back! The sports world has picked up enough steam for you to start taking notice again. While you’re drinking all things green this weekend (or looking for a regular-colored Guinness like a true Irishman) you’ll have your basic sports knowledge at the ready!

Welcome to March Madness!

True or False? March Madness is the month when so many sports events happen that sports fans go mad with excitement.

FALSE.

But that’s ok, the title is very sneaky!

March Madness pertains to the period of time in basketball when tournaments and their inherent surprises and upsets rule the sports world. Most specifically, it refers to the mother of all tournaments, the NCAA Basketball Championship!

Around this time every year, the quest for college basketball’s national champion begins. 68 teams are chosen to compete in this most exciting of playoff series. The tournament spans several weeks and is starting, you guessed it, TODAY!

What makes march madness so fun is the unpredictability of this competition. There is simply no guarantee that the team with the better record will win out. There’s just as much possibility for a losing team to make it all the way to the final as a team that had the best season in their college’s history. Previous records hold no weight. It’s all up to how each team plays in the moment. Lose one game, and your tournament dreams are over!

It is customary during March Madness for the truly enthused basketball fan to make a bracket. You may have even heard talk of this in your office or work place, because as true sports fans will, most bracket-fillers bet money that their picks are more accurate than their co-workers’/friend’s/mother’s. So many a basketball fan will engage in gambling this season with absolutely no certainty that their bracket is in any way a winning bracket (that’s why it’s a gamble, right?).

If you’re interested in this year’s bracket, you may find it here. If you’re interested in entering a bracket pool with your friends or co-workers (because even if this is your first time hearing of March Madness, you have just an equal a chance of winning some money as anyone else), there’s still time before the first game kicks off later today. You could also jump in on the women’s college basketball March Madness. Their tournament starts just a few days later on Saturday, and will be equally as exciting and unpredictable!

Even President Obama gets in on March Madness every year!

The Saints

It’s a tough month to be a Saints fan. Turns out the NFL team had something called a “Bounty System” in place since their Super Bowl win in 2009. The system allegedly paid players extra money for hard-hits and injuries on opposing players. It’s rumored the most money would be paid out for injuring an opposing player enough to have them taken out of the game.

While the entire team did not participate in the program, it’s clear that leadership within the team knew about the program, but did little to nothing to shut the program down. Apparently Defensive Coordinator, Gregg Williams, has instituted this sort of program during his time with other teams, such at the Titans, Redskins and Bills.

Eeeesh.

Carpe the HELL out of this diem!

Cheaper by the Anthro

March 1, 2012

My ultimate style frustration is Anthropologie. It fits exactly the kind of aesthetic I’m looking for in my wardrobe. Most importantly, the “days-of-old” inspired silhouettes play perfectly to my body type. But I can’t afford it. Too many times have I flipped through the catalog only to find a beautiful pair of shoes that cost [...]
